About Me
- AFGE Summer Interns
- The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union representing 600,000 federal and D.C. government workers nationwide and overseas. All throughout the year, each department at the headquarters hires interns to gain experience in their intended career. This year, a Communication's intern Necole Jackson interviewed some of them about their time spent here and how AFGE was helpful to them. Communications Department
Thanks to the Communications Department, we were able to display all of AFGE's interns experience. The Communications Department keeps our members informed on daily issues inside and outside AFGE. We have three interns in this department. Necole Jackson, who put the whole intern experience project together, and the interviewies Talia Roth (right), and Destiny Williams, who also helped (left).
Q. Tell me your Name, Age, School and Classification if you attend one?
A. Talia Roth, 19, Syracuse University, Sophomore
Q. What department do you work in at AFGE?
A. Communications Department
Q. What are some of the things that you deal with on a daily basis?
A. Lately, I have been doing a lot of work on AFGE Web sites. I do designs, updates, and make them more accessible. I have also been booking guests and do research for interviews on the radio show.
Q. What are your career goals and how does AFGE help to prepare you for it?
A. I hope to work in the non-profit industry either doing Graphic Design, writing or policy work. I think AFGE has given me an opportunity to either do or see all of those things and how they are put into action in a non-profit organization.
Q. Tell me your greatest experience working at here.
A. My greatest experience has been getting official OKs from government professionals to come on our radio show. I have worked really hard and to get them and when they finally respond with a date it is a really great feeling of accomplishment.
Q. What advice would you give the next intern or hire here at AFGE?
A. I would say be your own advocate. I have used skills here that I have interest in, such as Graphic Design, that I didn’t originally think was going to be part of my internship. When I expressed interest and my boss noticed my experience in it, she gave me assignments that I really had a lot of fun with. There are so many different things that go on every day in each department and it is really important that you are working on the things you enjoy most and are the best at.

Department of Membership & Organization
The Membership and Organization Department works very hard with our members, future members, and TSA people. We have two interns here that were glad to do interviews: Daniel Dewyngaert (left) and Dewayne Jones (right).

Q. Tell me your Name, Age, School and Classification if you attend one?
A. My name is DeWayne Jones. I'm 19 years old and I attend The College of Southern Maryland.Q. What department do you work in at AFGE?
A. I work in Membership & Organization Department, also known as M&O.
Q. What are some of the things that you deal with on a daily basis?
A. My fellow co-working interns and I distributes articles and pamphlets at airports to pass out to Transportation Security Administrators.
Q. What are your career goals and how does AFGE help to prepare you for it?
A. My career goal is to be an entrepreneur by becoming an investor. I would have to say AFGE doesn't really help to prepare me to succeed in my career goal, but helps me better myself.
Q. Tell me your greatest experience working at here.
A. I really liked the traveling free to the airports three times a week and meeting and bonding with the other interns in the department I worked with.
Q. What advice would you give the next intern or hire here at AFGE?
A. AFGE is a good, friendly environment to work. You can learn about the Union and all the benefits AFGE have to offer.
Office of General Counsel
The Office of the General Counsel is AFGE's legal team. There are quite a few interns; therefore, we decided to interview two of them. There names were Maggie Koch (left) and Erica Balkum (right).
A. Maggie Koch, 24, University of Toledo, College of Law, 3L
Q. What department do you work in at AFGE?
A. Office of the General Council
Q. What are some of the things that you deal with on a daily basis?
A. The majority of my day is spent analyzing case files submitted by AFGE Locals. I read all documentation provided, request any additional information necessary, and conduct research on the issue(s) of the case. After reviewing all relevant law and facts, I complete a memorandum with my recommendation on whether an attorney should be assigned to handle the case.
Q. What are your career goals and how does AFGE help to prepare you for it?
A. Honestly, my current career goal is to get a legal job when I graduate. In an ideal world, I would like to work in labor law. AFGE has provided me with several semesters’ worth of legal knowledge in ten short weeks. Instead of sitting in a classroom reading the law, I am reading and applying the law to real life fact patterns. I believe that the practical knowledge I have gained while at AFGE will make me more marketable to employers, especially for a labor law position.
Q. Tell me your greatest experience working at here.
A. I suppose my greatest experience here should be working with a client to get their job back, or paid the overtime they are due, but it is not. My greatest experience has been getting recognition for a letter which I spent a great deal of time working on. That particular client had raised a number of issues, which required an analysis of several statutes, regulations, and agency policies—many of which were not easy to find. Having attorneys’ in the office recognize my thorough analysis made the hours of research, several edits, and endless phone calls worth it.
Q. What advice would you give to the next intern or hire here at AFGE?
A. Do not be scared. Everyone in the office is fantastic and is willing to help. Relax; it will all go by so quick.
